There’s always room at the table

Yes, there’s a slight chill in the evening air, but there’s still time to enjoy those last-of-the-summer alfresco meals. Magical lighting, cosy layers and dishes made for sharing are all you need for savouring those special moments.

Warming lights

There’s something to be said about how a little lighting can have a big impact on any setting. As the evening light fades, create a welcoming atmosphere around the table with extra glow. This can include hanging fairy lights above, or dotting around as many candles as you like (and a few more for luck) on and around the table.

Cosy layers

Golden sunsets, fallen leaves and cooler temperatures. One of our favourite things about autumn is the shift to cosy. Have a couple of throws ready for guests, so they can wrap themselves up against the cold. Using a small sheepskin rug as a seat pad adds warmth and makes everything feel just that bit snugglier, too.

Simple sharers

Hosting? There’s no need to pile on the pressure and give yourself lots to do. It really is all about spending time together, rather than what you’ve cooked. Simple platters where everyone pitches in are ideal (“You bring the wine, I’ll make the salad”). Think a selection of seasonal roasted vegetables in big bowls, with crumbly cheeses, plump grapes and rustic bread served on help-yourself wooden boards.
