The Bedding Care Guide

We are passionate about quality fabrics, designing bed linen and bed essentials made to last and be loved for years. From the purest cotton and the latest sustainable materials to natural and synthetic duvets, pillows and mattress protectors, discover how to best care for these everyday essentials.

How to care for bed linen

Our story began Nearly 30 years ago and we truly believe premium bed linen is worth every penny, as it has the power to transform the quality of our sleep – and look and feel fabulous, too. To ensure yours stays in top condition, follow our wash and care tips. Always check each care label for individual wash instructions. We recommend washing bed linen once a week due to direct contact with skin.

Washing:

• Wash bed linen items separately to other items to protect the material and prevent rubbing against harsher fabrics and components (such as zippers or buttons).
• The wash temperature identified on the care label is a reference to the highest temperature the bed linen can withstand; consider washing at a lower temperature to save energy.
• Remove the bedding promptly from the washer to avoid any color transfer and shake the sheets out before placing in the dryer to reduce creases.

Drying:

• When possible, line dry sheets out of direct sunlight. This will help with the level of creasing and ironing needed.
• When using a tumble dryer, choose a low heat setting to protect fibers and prevent wrinkles.
• Be careful not to over-dry sheets, as this will weaken their natural fibers and potentially cause them to deteriorate.
• If intending to iron, take sheets out while damp and iron. If ironing completely dry, dampen the fabric thoroughly before.

Keeping sheets white:

• Regularly launder white sheets to help maintain brightness and freshness.
• Ensure your washer is totally clean. If your washer has a ‘Drum clean’ or ‘Tub clean’ setting, it is a cleaning cycle designed to remove detergent residue and build up.
• Wash similar colors together to avoid any color transfers. Avoid fabric softeners, as they can dull the finish.
• Some sheets will allow the use of non-chlorine bleach only and others no bleach at all, depending on the finishing process, type of fiber and color. It’s usually better to avoid chlorine bleaches as these can have a chemical reaction to protein stains and turn them more yellow. Check individual care labels for guidance.
• Treat stains quickly. This will increase your chances of removing them, rather than letting them settle into the fibers.
• Do not overload your washer – this can prevent it from cleaning whites properly as items cannot move as freely around the drum to remove dirt.
• Use the correct dosage of detergent to prevent build up and stop white bedding from turning gray.

Cotton

Super breathable, durable and luxuriously soft, cotton is simply beautiful to sleep beneath. Easy to care for and known for its durability, cotton bedding (if properly cared for) can stand the test of time.

How to wash:

  1. Wash temperatures can vary depending on the colors and finishes. Cottons are best washed at 90°F to 110°F. Always check each care label for individual wash instructions.
  2. Separate from other washing and, if using a small drum washer, wash the duvet cover and pillowcase separately from the sheet.
  3. Once out of the washer, shake the bedding into shape while still damp.

How to store:

  1. As cotton is a natural fiber, it will tend to crease more than synthetic blends.
  2. Line dry out of direct sunlight (this helps with the creasing level), or tumble dry at a low temperature.
  3. If ironing, we recommend ironing while damp to easily remove the creases.

Linen

A true wonder fabric – and one of the most sustainable – our linen has washed qualities that give it a relaxed and natural look. Originating from flax plants, we are making a conscious effort to source our linen more locally from mills across Europe. What’s more, these fibers become more supple after washing so the bedding can be enjoyed for years, making it a worthwhile investment.

linen care

How to wash:

  1. Linen can be machine washed at 110°F. Finer linen should be washed at 90°F. Always check each care label for individual wash instructions.
  2. Always wash linen bedding inside out to protect surface fibers. Use a fabric conditioner to help soften.
  3. For the best results, make sure the washer isn’t too full, so bedding can soak up water properly.

How to store:

  1. Linen fibers tend to dry quicker than other fabrics.
  2. Line dry out of direct sunlight, or tumble dry at a low temperature.
  3. If ironing, we recommend ironing while damp on a medium-heat setting. However, we think the natural quality of linen looks its best when left unironed.

Hemp

Hemp is recognised as one of the world’s most sustainable plants as it grows rapidly and requires minimal pesticides and water. A wonderfully natural and breathable material, it has similar qualities to linen with its relaxed and natural look.

How to wash:

  1. Hemp can be machine washed at 110°F. Finer hemp should be washed at 90°F. Always check each care label for individual wash instructions.
  2. Always wash hemp bed linen inside out to protect surface fibers. Use a fabric conditioner to help soften.
  3. For the best results, make sure the washer isn’t too full, so bed linen can soak up water properly.

How to store:

  1. Hemp fibers tend to dry quicker than other fabrics.
  2. Line dry out of direct sunlight, or tumble dry at a low temperature.
  3. If ironing, we recommend ironing while damp on a medium-heat setting. However, we think the natural quality of hemp looks its best when left unironed.

Silk

Not only does the smooth, lustrous finish of silk feel cool and smooth to sleep beneath, its natural properties are believed to replenish hair and skin moisture. It is a delicate fiber that drapes beautifully and is also known for its temperature-regulating benefits, too.

How to store:

  1. Line dry only on a clothes horse, or hang out to dry, keeping out of direct sunlight.
  2. Silk bed linen is best when ironed damp to minimize the effects of the iron’s heat. Make sure the iron is cleaned beforehand. Iron on the reverse on a low heat setting. Can also be steamed on a low temperature.
  3. Store in a cool, dark and dry place.

Cupro

Cupro is expertly spun from silky fibers left behind during cotton production, making full use of the cotton plant and reducing waste. A wonderfully durable and breathable material, it has similar qualities to silk with its exquisitely soft feel and premium look.

How to care for bedding essentials

We’ve earned the title Sleep Experts, thanks to 28 years’ expertise, exceptional craftsmanship and comprehensive testing to ensure our bed-essentials collection caters to every need. To ensure your natural, or synthetic duvets, pillows, mattress toppers and protectors stay in top condition, follow our wash and care tips. Always check each care label for individual wash instructions to keep the item in top condition. We recommend washing pillows, duvets and protectors every six months. We recommend using pillow and mattress protectors to extend the life of pillows and mattresses and protect them from stains.

Natural-filled pillows and comforters

How to air:

  1. We recommend airing comforters and pillows regularly.
  2. Open bedroom windows in the morning and shake bedding down slightly, so absorbed moisture can evaporate, letting the fibers breathe before covering with a bed cover.
  3. Never vacuum or beat them, as this can damage the product.

How to wash:

  1. We have developed our ranges to be suitable for domestic machine washing. However, for the best possible results and durability, we recommend professional laundering.
  2. If you would like to wash at home, check your washer capacity. Usually one comforter, or two pillows, will fit in a large-capacity washer.
  3. Use a non-biological detergent to protect the down.
  4. Wash at the temperature directed on the care label. This is usually 130°F on a gentle, hot-wash cycle – which is the temperature that will kill dust mites. Spin at the lowest setting.

How to dry:

  1. Drying is very important to protect natural filling – it must be totally dry so the down and feathers are not damaged.
  2. Depending on your tumble dryer’s drum size, it may take up to four or five hours to dry thoroughly.

Synthetic-filled pillows and comforters

How to air:

  1. We recommend airing comforters and pillows regularly.
  2. Open bedroom windows in the morning, shake bedding slightly to avoid clumping, letting the fibers breathe before covering with a bed cover.
  3. Never vacuum or beat them, as this can damage the product.

  1. We have developed our range to be suitable for domestic machine washing, however for the best possible results and durability we recommend professional laundering.
  2. If you would like to wash at home, check your washer capacity. Usually one comforter, or two pillows, fits a large capacity washer.
  3. Wash at the temperature specified on the care label and use a non-biological detergent to protect the fibers.

How to dry:

  1. Drying is very important to protect the filling – it must be totally dry so that the fibers are not damaged.
  2. Tumble dry on a low heat until thoroughly dry.
  3. Remove from the dryer and shake a few times during the cycle to redistribute the filling evenly.
  4. Put dryer balls or a clean tennis ball in with the comforter as it dries – this can prevent lumps from forming in the filling.
