Cashmere care guide

Truly timeless, cashmere is the ultimate investment piece. Sourced from Inner Mongolia, our cashmere is certified by The Good Cashmere Standard® and is of the highest quality, undergoing an extensive combing process, so optimum softness is guaranteed. From versatile V-necks to relaxed roll necks, our beautiful styles are true wardrobe heroes – designed to last, season after season, especially when you take good care of them. Here’s how…

How to wash cashmere

on a clean surface a cashmere piece laid flat

1

On a clean surface, lay your cashmere piece completely flat and use a pilling comb to gently remove all the bobbles.

2

Select a gentle washing detergent. Steamery’s fabric wash is designed to effectively clean and nourish delicate materials and is lightly scented with notes of wild rose and musk. Avoid biological detergents, as they contain enzymes that break down protein fibres.

Fill a clean sink, or bucket, with lukewarm water and add the required amount of detergent.

3

Turn the garment inside out and submerge in the water for five to 10 minutes. Do not soak.

Rinse in cool water, until the water runs clear.

4

Squeeze to remove excess water, but do not wring. Lay flat on a dry towel, roll up and press with your palms to remove excess.

Reshape and lay flat to dry – hanging on a line, or clothes horse, will distort it.

Get to know cashmere

No other fabric envelops so wonderfully, and caresses so softly, for a sense of unrivalled everyday luxury. Find out more about this special yarn.

What's in a gauge?

Not all cashmere jumpers are created equal. A higher gauge indicates a lighter knit, while a lower one means it will feel thicker. A looser knit technique can also lend cashmere a loftier feel.

What is pilling?

Because cashmere is such a delicate natural fibre, it’s sometimes prone to bobbling after wear – referred to as pilling. Pilling will normally occur in areas exposed to friction, which causes the shorter cashmere fibres to lift out of the surface and create a small ball of fibre. These can easily be removed by running a pilling comb over the area and will lessen over time after a few hand washes.

What makes it so special?

It can take the down from three goats to make just one jumper, which is why cashmere is considered the ultimate luxury

How to store cashmere

Avoid hanging cashmere, as it will distort the fragile fibres and lose the garment’s shape. Store folded in acid-free tissue paper, or a cloth bag, to protect it and keep it in great condition. Our gift boxes – starting from £5 – are a great option, too.

To keep moths away, we recommend using cedar balls in your wardrobe and drawers. You can also help by never putting cashmere away dirty – which is more likely to attract them.
