Spotlight on: hemp

One of the strongest and most sustainable natural textile fibres there is, we delve into how this material benefits both us and the planet.

Hemp is an ancient plant that humans have cultivated for thousands of years, but what exactly makes it a sustainable fibre? Well, unlike conventional cotton, hemp requires significantly less water to grow. Its cultivation demands minimal-to-no pesticide use, reducing environmental pollutants and promoting healthier ecosystems. Because the plant is so fast-growing, hemp crops also produce high yields. It can be planted close together, taking up a considerably smaller amount of land than other crops, and can restore vital nutrients back to the soil. Not to mention, hemp actually absorbs CO2 (four times more than trees do, in fact) making it carbon-negative from the get-go.

Beyond its sustainable properties, hemp fabric is exceptionally durable and becomes more supple with every use. The plant produces long, sturdy stalks that contain tough, resilient fibres with a high tensile strength, meaning they can tolerate stretching and pressure without breaking easily – ideal for creating long-lasting fabrics that can withstand daily wear and tear. Naturally antimicrobial and resistant to mould, mildew, and abrasion, hemp is also hypoallergenic. Being plant based, pure-hemp products break down naturally, returning to the earth without leaving behind harmful residues, and can be reprocessed, for an even gentler environmental footprint.
