It’s all in the texture

As darker days arrive, our mindsets shift towards relaxation and staying in – and our spaces should reflect that. Interiors expert Ali Heath shows us the small switches to our homes this autumn  for ultimate comfort.

With the arrival of autumn, our natural circadian rhythms slow down as we adjust to the impact of less light, more darkness and cooler temperatures. This can radically affect our mood, cause us to experience tiredness and encourage us to want to hibernate more. I always find the prospect of hunkering down an exciting one, but making home a welcoming, cosy place to return is so much more than simply changing up the visual aesthetic. It is about recognising the impact these changes have on our own emotional happiness and wellbeing, providing a greater sense of comfort and sanctuary – and matching the changes to the pattern of the emerging season.

For me, the process of change always begins with the type of textures used throughout our home. I like to think of the textures I add in the same way I approach my autumn wardrobe. It starts with the foundation of an outfit – one or two statement pieces matched with great basics (and then the finishing layers that we wrap ourselves in), before adding the final embellishments.

It is never about reinventing your complete look, but simply packing away more floaty summer layers and replacing them with more densely, textured fabrics that feel good to touch and enhance the level of nurture. Think woven cushions, faux-fur rugs, soft sheepskins, cosy woollen throws and my favourite fabric: cashmere. For me, cashmere is the ultimate in tactile, autumnal luxury. The throws I have collected over a long period, have become timeless and more precious as the years pass – associated with stories of family life, around the fire, or huddled up outside with friends, enjoying the final rays of brisk, autumn sunshine.

At this time of year, lamplight becomes an everyday luxury for me. I increase the number of lamps in all our living spaces, as they add a warmth that is wonderful to return to. There is little more welcoming than a well-lit home – no bright, harsh overhead lights, just the joy of softly diffused lamps and pendants.

Candlelight is something I love all-year round but, in autumn, the lighting of candles becomes a ritual that I enjoy. As the day begins, a scented candle burns always in the kitchen and on my desk. And then, as the light dims and shutters and blinds are closed, I take the time to light a few more in our sitting room and hallway – to welcome home family or greet the arrival of friends. Scent is an important part of this occasion, and an infusion of woody, earthy undertones always evoke the spirit of autumn.

As the season progresses, I often rethink furniture layouts and explore opportunities to create more cosy nooks. A deep windowsill layered with soft cushions and faux-fur throws can become a favourite nesting spot to watch wilder, autumnal days play out from the comfort of inside. The addition of an extra fireside chair and a stack of books will encourage you to make time to slow down and relax. I always like to have extra occasional seating options to hand for additional guests and visitors – functional yet tactile footstools and pouffes, that can easily double as side tables when not needed.

And when it comes to entertaining (and the return of my favourite meal of the week – Sunday lunch) I love to layer our dining table with heavier tablecloths, mixed collections of tableware and handmade ceramic vases filled with foliage, collected on weekend walks. Yes, the days may be getting darker outside but, inside, our well-dressed homes can become magical escapes.
