The white summer suitcase

With holiday season almost here, we asked two of our favourite stylish women all about packing for a sunny getaway and why it's so much easier when you stick to shades of white…

Katherine Ormerod

Talk us through what you would pack.

“Summer has to be about ease, and nothing beats that more than a fuss-free dress. I also love a co-ord – again, it’s that 'no-brainer' appeal. You don’t have to match anything: just throw it on and go. As for travel, I am carry-on girl for life and do everything I can to avoid waiting at a luggage carousel. That means absolutely everything must earn its space in my cabin bag and it all has to work together. The simplest way to do that is to only pack one colour. And in summer, nothing beats white.”

What makes white so great for summer?

“Aside from its light-reflecting properties, it just metaphorically brings a breath of fresh air. I actually wear white year-round, but it really comes into its own in the warmest months.”

What’s the one item you always pack?

“If we’re being practical, it’s earplugs. If we’re talking chic, it’s perfume.”

What’s your best tip for summer packing?

“You do not need eight pairs of shoes and six bags. That way madness lies! Try everything on in outfits before you pack and don’t just chuck random separates in ‘just in case’. No brand-new sandals or shoes you intend walking in. And pack for the holiday you’re actually going on, not the one of your Skyscanner fantasies, i.e. if you’re going to Cornwall with the kids, you probably don’t need a floor-length gown.”

What was your most memorable summer holiday?

“When I was 18 and had finished my A-levels, I backpacked through Italy for six weeks and it was one of the most eye-opening experiences of my life. I have been back several times since (I even got married there), but it was the first steps along the Amalfi coast and that first glimpse of Florence that has always stayed with me. There is no more beautiful place to be in the summer.”

Talk us through what you would pack...

“I’m known for my love of white dresses. My summer wardrobe is just not complete without them. It’s a look that immediately sets the tone of an easy, calm and relaxed summer holiday. In terms of PJs, nothing beats a cool linen set to fall asleep in. I’m particularly taken by the delicate stitching detail on this set. I’m even tempted to wear them outside the bedroom!”

What makes white so great for summer?

“It’s such an easy colour to wear. There's a lightness to it, particularly in the way it gives a fresh feel to an outfit. The simplicity of a white linen dress or a crisp white shirt makes it the perfect holiday colour of choice.”

What’s your best tip for summer packing?

“Lean towards what makes you feel good. I've been packing the same white, linen, oversized shirt for years – it's somehow got better with time and it's the perfect beach-to-lunch number.”

What was your most memorable summer holiday?

“Our first holiday as a family. We went to Harbour Island in The Bahamas, which is just heavenly, and we were in that sweet spot where our son was at the age of having multiple naps a day so we could really enjoy the holiday, too.”
