Furniture measuring guide

Before buying new furniture, we know you want to be sure it's the right size and proportion for your room, which is why we've created this easy-to-follow guide.

Will it fit in your room?

First things first, you want to know that your furniture will fit the proportions of your room. Here’s how to visualise it in your space:

1. Take note

We give full measurements (height, width, depth and length) for every piece of furniture we sell. You’ll find this information in the ‘Size & Care’ tab on the product page. Record these dimensions on paper, so they’re easily to hand.

1. Map it out

Once you have your measurements, map out the piece of furniture with masking tape in the position you would ideally like it to live. Make sure you have enough space to walk around the piece of furniture and, if you’re buying something with drawers or doors, remember you will need to ensure there’s enough space to open them.

Will it get into your home?

If you have successfully mapped out your new piece of furniture, it is now important to measure all of the access routes into the room. Here's how:

step 1

Measure the heights (A) and the widths (B) of any hallways and door accesses, as well as the entry clearance (C).

step 2

Once you have these measurements, remember diagonal height (D) must be less than all entryway dimensions (A or C).

step 3

Depth (E) must be less than entryway dimension (B).

For sofas and armchairs, the dimension between the bottom-back corner and the point where the arm meets the backrest (C) is important to note as it shows the minimum width your doorway must be. The width of your doorway needs to be more than either measurement A or B of your chair, too.

Don't Forget...

…if the item needs to be taken upstairs, consider the clearance area directly above your stairs. Shallow ceilings may make manoeuvring large furniture difficult. Capture any light fittings and radiators in your initial measurements. Take pictures off your walls before we deliver your furniture.
