Why white always looks best in the bedroom

We are firm believers in the power of a neutral colour palette, and white is the quintessential neutral: calming, serene, soothing. It’s the ideal canvas to layer with other easy-going shades (soft greys, subtle browns and warm beiges), as well as sumptuous textures. No wonder we’ve been championing it for the past 30 years. From the shade on your walls to the colour of your nightwear, white is hard to beat when it comes to creating a dreamy sleep haven.

White walls

White paints come in many shades containing undertones and tonal pigments, that make them warm, tranquil and inviting. Avoid anything labelled ‘pure brilliant white’, because it can look stark and clinical on walls. Instead, go for something with character. Our favourite whites to use in the bedroom are Farrow & Ball’s All White, Benjamin Moore’s White Dove and Dulux’s Timeless. You can layer whites, too, using complementing shades on the walls and woodwork, to give more depth to the room.

White bedding

We believe one of life’s simple pleasures is sinking into white bedding at the end of a long day: like sleeping on a cloud. Bed linen is where our brand started and we’ve been sourcing the softest fabrics, perfecting hand-finished embroidery and paying attention to every little detail in-between for three decades. From crisp cotton and fresh linen to smooth Mulberry silk and clever fabric blends, white bedding works all-year-round: just replace linen with brushed cotton when the weather cools down, or layer a quilt or throw in a complementary neutral shade on top of our Egyptian-cotton sheets.

White textures

To make white bedrooms feel elegant and stylish, experiment with plenty of texture. Think embroidered cushion covers, long-pile sheepskin rugs and quilted throws. You can inject movement and interest into other elements of your bedroom, too: arrange long stems in glossy, white-glazed clay vases, or wildflowers in sandy-textured bud vases. And remember there’s the canvas of your walls to consider, as well. Opt for white pieces featuring geometric or organic shapes hand-pressed in papier-mâché, and frame them in warm mango wood for a subtle contrast.

White sleepwear

Timeless and elegant, whatever the season, white is an easy choice when it comes to what to wear to bed. Made that little bit more special by piping in contrasting colours, embroidery in delicate designs and subtle lace trims, find a favourite lightweight linen nightie on warm nights and cosy long-sleeved PJs when the temperature dips. Just add cashmere bed socks in winter, or a silk eye mask as the mornings get brighter.
