On a clean surface, lay your cashmere piece completely flat and use a pilling comb to gently remove all the bobbles.
Select a gentle washing detergent designed to effectively clean and nourish delicate materials. Avoid biological detergents, as they contain enzymes that break down protein fibers.
Fill a clean sink, or bucket, with lukewarm water and add the required amount of detergent.
Turn the garment inside out and submerge in the water for five to 10 minutes. Do not soak.
Rinse in cool water, until the water runs clear.
Squeeze to remove excess water, but do not wring. Lay flat on a dry towel, roll up and press with your palms to remove excess.
Reshape and lay flat to dry – hanging on a line, or clothes horse, will distort it.

Not all cashmere sweaters are created equal. A higher gauge indicates a lighter knit, while a lower one means it will feel thicker. A looser knit technique can also lend cashmere a loftier feel.
Because cashmere is such a delicate natural fiber, it’s sometimes prone to bobbling after wear – referred to as pilling. Pilling will normally occur in areas exposed to friction, which causes the shorter cashmere fibers to lift out of the surface and create a small ball of fiber. These can easily be removed by running a pilling comb over the area and will lessen over time after a few hand washes.
It can take the down from three goats to make just one sweater, which is why cashmere is considered the ultimate luxury.
Avoid hanging cashmere, as it will distort the fragile fibers and lose the garment’s shape. Store folded in acid-free tissue paper, or a moth-proof cloth bag, to protect it and keep it in great condition. Our gift boxes – starting from $9.95 – are a great option, too.
To keep moths away, we recommend using cedar balls in your closet and drawers. You can also help by never putting cashmere away dirty – which is more likely to attract them.
