The pleasure of on-point sleepwear

Rosie Green has got herself a closet of clothes just for the bedroom – and she couldn’t recommend it more…

Do you think about what you are going to wear to bed? Plan your evening-in attire? I didn’t. Well not until recently. Although I meticulously prepped party outfits and worked hard on perfecting wedding co-ords, what I sported between the sheets was of no consequence to me. And, as such, it was usually worn, ill-fitting and deeply unflattering. And then lockdown happened. As did a new relationship after a long marriage. Suddenly I was home based. I was spending more time in sleepwear. And being seen in it by a new love. It made me up my sleepwear game.

My first foray into bedtime apparel was that summer. I ordered a cotton camisole and shorts set. It was a revelation. Not only did it look good, it felt incredible. Its crisp coolness pleased the senses, and the cut flattered my figure. The details – the perfectly cut neckline and the detailing on the shorts – sparked joy. It was a self-gift that still pays dividends because I wear and wear it. Just like The White Company’s clothing, the finish on their nightwear is superb. There’s beautiful details and delicate floral prints that are joy giving. Emboldened, last autumn, I ordered pyjamas in the softest jersey with a delicate lace trim. They are a life enhancer. Then, as an (asked-for) present, came a silk nightgown which made me feel empowered, sophisticated, glamorous and grown-up all at once.

It was an investment, but on a cost-per-wear basis, it must be in the pennies. As we all embrace wellness and realize the importance of rest, I value the quality of these designs more and more. Sleep is key to mental and physical health, and fabrics which are breathable, regulate body temperature and feel incredible on the skin aren’t just nice to have, but more of a necessity. Comfort is high and there’s no restrictive waistbands or scratchy metal wear. As the nights draw in, I’m hankering after a pair of flannel PJs that will make sofa evenings and lazy Sunday mornings feel special.

Plus, a cocooning fluffy cotton robe that’s bound to make every day feel like a spa one. Oh, and a cashmere robe is on my wish list, too, because I have felt them in store, and I know ownership would be life changing (no exaggeration).

Now, I truly believe investing in sleepwear is investing in yourself. And rather than spend on party shoes (yearly outings? maximum three), I am going to spend my hard-earned money on pieces I will wear, on rotation, 365 nights. Bon nuit.
