Bed Linen Buying Guide

Three things to consider when buying a new pillow

Find the right filling and level of support for you

1. Support

What position do you sleep in

Different levels of support are needed depending on how you sleep to help keep the spine aligned.

Front sleeper

Soft or Medium. Look to something that won’t lift your head, as this will exacerbate the twist in the neck.

Back sleeper

Soft or Medium. Avoid firmer ones as these will raise the head too much and can cause neck and shoulder pain.

Side sleeper

Medium or Firm. This offers support for the neck and shoulders. Broader shoulders will need a firmer pillow.

2. Filling

What’s inside it

Natural or synthetic, we make sure each of our pillows feels particularly plump and comfortable to sleep on.

Down & feathers

Feathers are larger than down and are used in the middle of the pillow to offer support. Down is much more light and lofty, so, the higher the down percentage, the softer and plumper the pillow will feel.

Duck down & feathers

One of the most popular fillings for pillows. Feathers and down from different locations and species offer comfort.

Goose down & feathers

Sometimes perceived as more premium than duck, as the clusters of down are larger and puff back up very quickly after being used.

Smartfil®

Tiny micro fibres glazed with a silicone layer which allows them to slide over each other smoothly, resulting in a down-like feel.

Smartdown®

Micro-clusters of synthetic fibres are blown into the casing until perfectly even to mimic the down-like feel of a natural pillow.

Memory foam

Crafted from a polyurethane material that is sensitive to pressure and temperature, it moulds to the shape of an individual's body and provides a high level of comfort.

3. Purpose

Who is sleeping on it and where

You may need a slightly different style for guest bedrooms, allergy sufferers and more.

Do they have any allergies?

A down-alternative or hypoallergenic filling is ideal, and easy to wash regularly. Some of our feather and down ranges are Nomite™ certified, meaning fillings are sealed in a tightly woven fabric cover which acts as a barrier against dust mites.

What’s their body type?

People who are taller or have broader shoulders require a firmer pillow for more stable support of the neck.

Is it for a guest bedroom?

Medium-support pillows are ideal for guest rooms as they suit a variety of sleepers. Alternatively, you could layer the bed with two medium and two firm ones, to give options.

Constructed for comfort

We set the highest standards when it comes to the comfort of our natural down-surround pillows, with a clever three-chamber construction to provide excellent support. Each one has a slightly firmer feather middle core, surrounded by two outer chambers containing a mix of lighter down and feathers to provide softness. We then wrap everything in a super-soft pure cotton case to make sure no feathers escape.
